Are You Prepared?
In the event of a disaster, will you survive?
The CEO of my company held meetings with all of the employees today to
advise us how to best be prepared in the event of a disaster -- including an
act of terrorism.

He gave us all handouts, most of which were printed from the web.  So I'm
including a number of links below, hoping you will follow up with them and
prepare yourself to your level of comfort.

He said, and I agree, that each of us has our own comfort level of how
prepared we need to be.  I myself have been thinking about this for several
days.  Right now, I have enough batteries and flashlights, and candles to get
me through quite a while with no electricity.  I have lots of large plastic bags
and duct tape to seal my few doors and windows.  But I only have enough
food in the house for possibly 2 days (Pat and I eat a lot of take out).  And I
really don't have the money to spend on a weeks worth of "emergency
supplies" that may not get eaten.  The only way I could do it is to charge it --
and I hate the thought of charging food to my credit card -- what if I charge
all that and never need it?  Then I think -- what if I don't charge it and I do?
The more I think about it, the more comfortable I feel charging it and
knowing that I have it.  So I'm going shopping tonight.  And I know that I
will sleep a lot better.

How prepared are you?  Have you thought of everything -- food, water,
battery operated radio and flashlights.  How long would they last?  Will it be
long enough?  If the local authorities knocked on your door and said you
have 10 minutes to evacuate -- would you be ready?  If all traffic is stopped
and you're on the road -- how long before you pass out from dehydration?

So in the event of a natural disaster or an act of terrorism -- how prepared
are you?  I myself feel that we are already being terrorized.  I think the fear
instilled in us by the Security Alert at Orange is terrorism in and of itself.  And
here, too, we all have our own levels of just how anxious we are -- no one is
right or wrong for how they feel.  No one can tell us that we should or
shouldn't be worried.  Our fears are valid, but we must not let them rule our
lives -- for then the terrorists have won.  So find your level of comfort and
prepare accordingly.

As for me, as I said, I am going shopping tonight; and tomorrow, maybe
Sunday, I'll go to the movies and maybe dinner; and on Monday, I'll go to
work; and on Tuesday I'll go to work; and I will continue to live my life, not
without fear entirely, but not without peace of mind either.

And I sincerely hope that all of my preparedness is for naught.  But no matter
what, it will not be unnecessary -- after all, can you really put a price tag on
peace of mind?
